Head of Software Engineering
About Intergrid
Intergrid is a Helsinki-based technology company offering an Autopilot for industrial energy operations, with a mission to make the green energy transition a no-brainer for all industrials.
Industrials are adopting electric-hybrid energy systems to cut energy costs, hedge fuel price risk and reduce their carbon footprint, but managing multiple energy sources and real-time power markets quickly exceeds the capabilities of existing tools and human operators.
Trusted by 100+ industrial sites in Europe, Intergrid's Autopilot handles the complexity and controls hybrid energy systems and power market trading 24/7. In less than three years, we've grown exceptionally fast from three founders with an ambitious vision to a fast-growing, diverse team of >35 people from different nationalities.
To accelerate our growth, we have also secured >10M€ in funding from top-tier US and Finnish investors, such as True Ventures, Lifeline Ventures, Risto Siilasmaa, and the founders of Aiven. This allows us to continue expanding the team on all fronts with top talent passionate about tackling complex challenges and driven by curiosity and kindness.
We enjoy active collaboration and want to get to know our teammates beyond their Zoom profiles, so we would love to see you at our office located in Kalevankatu 30, Helsinki, as often as possible. Still, we all appreciate the possibility of working remotely from time to time.
About the role
We're looking for a full-time Head of Software Engineering to join our fast-growing team in Helsinki!
You’ll own the technical direction and growth of our software team, leading engineers who build the core of the Autopilot and the product layers that tie it all together (perception, decision-making, control), ensuring we can reliably run our customers' energy operations autonomously. This is a leadership role with genuine engineering depth; you'll stay close to the architecture and code to make sharp decisions and earn your team's trust, while coaching the people and ways of working that let us move fast.
Why this opportunity is ideal for you: This is a chance to step into a foundational engineering leadership role in a fast-growing company. As our first Head of Engineering, you'll set the technical direction for the Intergrid Autopilot that controls real industrial energy systems across Europe. The problems are genuinely hard: event-driven distributed systems, power market integrations, and mission-critical reliability at scale.
This is a player-coach role. You'll report to our CTO, join the management team, and lead the Software Development team through a period of fast growth, from ~10 engineers today to the org that takes Intergrid to thousands of live customers. This is a rare opportunity to set the technical direction and execution, and build a high-performing tech team from the ground up.
Key responsibilities
Own the technical direction of Autopilot: architecture, system design, and the engineering decisions that determine how we scale a mission-critical platform reliably
Lead and grow the engineering team: hire and shape the software development team as we scale, and nurture the culture, practices, and ownership model that let the team move fast without breaking things
Drive engineering execution: set and hold the bar on code quality, testing, CI/CD, observability, and incident response; ensure the team ships reliably and learns from failure
Lead Intergrid's AI strategy in engineering: define how AI is embedded into both our product and our ways of working (AI-assisted development, automated testing, tooling); separate the signal from the hype and make deliberate bets
Own the engineering roadmap: work closely with product, analytics, and operations to prioritise ruthlessly, manage trade-offs transparently, and deliver on commitments
Be a key interface between engineering and leadership: translate technical complexity into strategic decisions, and push back when needed
Shape how we build: establish the processes, tooling, and engineering standards that scale with the team; make deliberate build-vs-buy decisions across integrations, infrastructure, and IoT connectivity
Who we are looking for
Proven engineering leader: You’ve led high-performing software teams by hiring and growing engineers, setting standards, and shipping complex backend/platform products to production while staying close to architecture and key technical decisions.
AI-native builder: You actively experiment with AI tooling, form strong opinions on where it adds real leverage, and continuously evolve your team's ways of working to capture it.
Scale & reliability mindset: You’ve designed and operated scalable, event-driven, or real-time systems in production and you build teams that ship with quality. Strong practices around code review, testing, and incident ownership.
High-agency: You thrive in a fast-paced environment, set direction with ownership, and move work forward independently.
Clear communicator: Excellent written and verbal communication in English; you bridge technical depth and business priorities.
Mission-driven: You care about accelerating the energy transition in the real world by helping industrials operate hybrid energy systems through autonomous control.
What we offer
Ownership: As the first Head of Engineering, you'll have genuine influence over our technical direction, product, and culture.
Values-driven culture: Be part of a culture built on kindness, curiosity, and creating win-win-win outcomes for customers, planet, and our success.
Rapid growth journey: Join one of today's most exciting industries and a quickly growing technology company on a mission to drive the green energy transition forward.
Competitive salary & stock options: Reflect your experience and commitment to our shared success.
Thrive in our Helsinki HQ: Vibrant, supportive, and inclusive office-first environment.
Our hiring process will typically follow these steps:
First Interview (60 min)
Get to know each other, learn about your motivation and previous experience, together with CTO. Discussion about the role and and your potential fit to Intergrid, including our mission, vision, and ways of working. You are more than welcome to visit our office.
Growth & potential interview (60 min)
We focus on you beyond your CV with our CTO and People Lead: what drives you and what experiences have shaped you, and how you approach personal growth and leadership.
Case assignment (90 min)
Show off your skills in the case assignment at our office. Focus on engineering leadership, technical direction, and scaling a mission-critical platform.
Founder interview (90 min)
Meet all our founders and dive into our strategy, culture and future plans. Ask all your toughest questions.
'Work with us' afternoon (½ day)
We invite you to work with Intergrid team for a half day to ensure our ways of working align with your aspirations. It is a significant commitment on both sides; thus we only move to this stage if we really want to work with you. It's designed to help both sides make the right decision, and especially giving you a transparent opportunity to decide on a new career chapter. You will receive compensation for this.
